Got books?

I love to read.
I can devour a good book in a day if it's worth it.
Hubs always says I waste them by reading them that fast but how can you not?
It's like I can't wait to take in all of the story_  all of the info.
I like fiction but I really like non-fiction.. something about the learning part that I can't get enough of. Taking away even a small tidbit of something real and tangible can be life changing.

My parents divorced when I was really young and my mom likes to say that she brought me to the library and read to me to keep herself sane. Reading helped her to focus on something other than
what all was going on around us. So I would pick out the limit of books we could check out_
which was a stack of like 15, and we would curl up usually in her bed_ and she would read til'
I told her I had had enough. I think that's probably where my love for it came to be.

I want and hope for my kids to have that same love of a good book.
I see my daughters especially of late really getting into certain books and I love it.
Just last night Kayli had to tell me of an event in her book called "Ida B" where a family is forever changed by a mom who has cancer. So in between watching the CMA's and commercial breaks I
would read a bit here and a bit there to her. Both my girls like for me to read because it helps them
to get through the book quicker. And I like it because we get to discuss certain things that are happening in the story and it leads in to those teachable moments.
It's been awhile though since I've gotten caught up in a good book.

And I thought for Christmas I may add a few to my wish list.
So what's been a great book either you've learned the most from(other than the bible) _
been the best read_ or that is the "one" you would hold onto if getting rid of all the rest?
I can't pick just one... I have issues with picking a 1 favorite thing... because it leaves out too much else that I like. And the above picture are all some books I've read within the past year...
all having goodness within.
But the last book I read was "one thousand gifts" by Ann Voskamp and I would say it's a must read.

Got books?
Heather :)

  1. Okay... I wish I could link up to you today because my post would totally work! lol

Also.... I did read One Thousand Gifts- well, tried- and it was very good! It inspired me to write down everything I'm thankful for, but honestly... just could NOT get through the book!

Her writing is just so emotional and dramatic that my sarcasm got in the way and I just couldn't click with her. lol I know that's ridiculous.

  3. I just ordered Ida B to give to Lexie (my daughter) for Christmas! She reads like you do. She'll start a big chapter book on a Saturday morning and it's done by late afternoon!

In college, I took a Women's Lit class and one of the required books really stuck with me. It is fiction, but I loved it's message. I think you'd like it - Unless by Carol Shields.

  6. I loooovvve books! My daughter is almost 3 and at the age where she can't sit still long enough for me to read even a page to her but I hope she grows out of that soon. My husband asked me if I wanted a kindle or something like that I said no, I just love to buy a new book and add it to my shelf.

  7. I am about to start reading One Thousand Gifts... I know you said you prefer to nonfiction...but girl let me tell you about Charles Martin...love his fiction books. i read all 7 of his books in 2 weeks. could.not.put.them.down. I'm not much of a nonfiction reader (I need a little bit of make believe in my life)...but my fav nonfiction book is Same Kind of Different as Me...I cried the whole book.

  11. I love that about you and your mom. So sweet. The best book I've read lately is "Loving God with all Your Mind" by Elizabeth George. It was instrumental in helping me through a season of depression. It's chock-a-block full of such great wisdom pertaining to our thought life. It was kinda like a life preserver God tossed to me at just the right time. :)

  13. ah! we HAVE to trade book ideas for our girls. my 9yr old is SUCH a reader too. i too would much rather read non-fiction. the best book i've read lately is Beautiful Outlaw about the personality of Jesus. But I love anything by Elizabeth Elliot. Best parenting book I've read lately is Grace-Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel. Rocked me. I'm looking foward to reading Ann's book (on my shelf) and Katie Davis' new book I think called Kisses from Katie about her work with orphans in Africa.
